Guide: Securely Wipe Your iPhone

Multinova, over at iPhoneFreakz.com, has put together a nice guide for securely erasing the pre-3G iPhone.

UPDATE (15 July 2008): I could not get the steps in this guide to work when it came time for me to secure-wipe my iPhone after I sold it. See my guide for doing this, which I think is actually more secure than the one referenced below.

» Securely wipe your iPhone…

The instructions involve SSH, an app called “Erase Utility”, and a simple Unix command. Both the BSD Subsystem and OpenSSH (or another SSH app) are required. Obviously, the iPhone must also be jailbroken, since you will need to install the BSD Subsystem, OpenSSH, and Erase Utility on the device.

I’ll be using this guide in about a month when I get my 3G iPhone and it comes time to sell my current model.
